empowa is a new media artist and creative technologist, and the founder of TIAT, the intersection of art and technology, in San Francisco.
For her IRL guide to San Francisco, empowa maps five rooms where the city's art and technology scenes meet, from a Mission district hub for antidisciplinary collaboration to a spaceship-like spatial sound theater beloved by audiophiles since the late 1950s, by way of her own gallery for creative technologists on Powell Street.

It's special because it's experimental, daring, and grassroots.

The Lab
The Lab is where you go when you're looking for experimental sound and performance. The Lab is a nonprofit supporting traditionally underrepresented artists with significant funding, time, and space. They seek to engage meaningfully with visionary communities whose economic and cultural realities have been ignored for too long. The Lab is a catalyst for artistic experimentation, with a track record to boot. I've seen some of my favorite freak performances here.

An iconic San Francisco-ism, the Audium pioneered spatial sound art. Featuring programming and collaborations with artists from diverse communities, Audium's mission is to amplify perceptual awareness in worlds of sound and space. They have an awesome custom-built spaceship-like listening room with surround sound, and have been a treasured spot for audiophiles since the late 1950s.

Telematic Media Arts is a black box gallery, art book publisher, and production company in San Francisco's SoMa District with a focus on time-based arts, screen culture, and art's intersection with technology. The Director, Clark Buckner, is doing hero's work in curating insightful media art practices and bringing them to San Francisco.
